Preparing for Your Initial Consultation

Ready to find out if proton therapy is the right choice for you? The next step is an initial consultation with one of our expert radiation oncologists. Your consultation is an introduction to the world of proton therapy and MPTC’s specialists, resources and facilities.

Consultations are most effective when you are comfortable and well prepared for your visit. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your consultation.

Schedule your consultation. You can contact us online, call us directly or have your physician contact us at 410-369-5200. We will then work with your physician to gather information such as your medical records (e.g., clinical reports and biopsies) and insurance information. We’ll ask you to come into the center within two days of our receipt of your paperwork.

Prepare requested background information. Before your appointment, we will send you a list of background materials, which may include medical records, scans, treatment plans, or other information. You may have these sent to MPTC in advance, or you may bring them with you.

Write down any questions. We want to make sure that you have the opportunity to ask questions during your appointment. Many people find it helpful to write a list of questions or concerns prior to the consultation.

Bring a support person. A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Having a friend or family member accompany you to your consultation can provide emotional support and help ensure that you get the information you need, understand your treatment options, and have your questions answered.

After the consultation

We will send a summary of your visit and an initial recommendation to you and your physician within 24 hours of the visit.

If proton therapy is the recommended treatment, we will contact your insurance on your behalf for approval and work with you to schedule the pre-treatment scans needed to build your personalized treatment plan.

If proton therapy is not recommended, we will be happy to recommend alternatives within the University of Maryland or within your physician’s group.
